Underneath the PM message box is a small check-off box that says "Save a copy in my outbox." You need to check that box before you hit Send Message.

If you didn't check the "Save a copy in my outbox" box before sending the message, there will be nothing to retrieve because a copy was not saved.

Also, if you go to "My Messages", then select "Preferences" and "Change Settings", there's a checkbox towards the bottom that makes saving in your outbox automatic.
